Basilica Cistern, İstanbul The Basilica Cistern is one of the most important cultural sites, located southwest of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. It was built during the reign of the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I in 532. The cistern provided water to the city for hundreds of years by distributing water obtained from waterways and rainfall. Its name comes from the marble columns that rise from the water, appearing countless. The walls and floor were designed to be waterproof. Inside, there are 336 marble columns, each 9 meters tall.
